Floods in Northern Buenos Aires Province Impact Late Crops
Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.
Late last week, severe flooding occurred in various areas of northern Buenos Aires province. Rainfall amounts over a two-day period varied from 3-4 inches to more than 13 inches. This area is flat as a pancake, so water tends to drain very slowly. The flooding has impacted late-maturing crops, especially double crop soybeans and late planted corn. The quality of the double crop soybeans will be impacted due to increased mold and low weight soybeans. The total amount of damage has yet to be determined, but certainly crops in the localized areas will be negatively impacted. In the area of the heaviest rainfall, it may be several weeks before farmers are able to resume harvesting.
Additionally, the floods have eroded highways, rural roads, and bridges which will complicate the harvest progress. Farmers are particularly concerned about the status of their filled silo bags. Many farmers in the area use these bags as temporary storage, but now they may be under water for an extended period of time. The extent of the damage to the stored grain is yet to be determined, but it is expected to be substantial.
